Profiling is not needed here as I already know which line takes the longest time in my search routine. This line is the problem:

@k=grep(/^$k/, @prkeys);

Since I'm looking for a partial key, a hash will not work here. So that's why I went with a regex.

I don't know of any data structures that will work with my problem, hence my post here.
