Actually, there is a lot to making a game - you have to take in account many many different things: a easy to use and effective user interface, game flow, story, database coding, fighting/moving/action algorithims, map systems, computer psuedo-intelligence, sound, graphics (be it full on OpenGL, GD, or basic GIFs) and many many other things - I have said before that writing a computer game may in fact be one of the most difficult applications to write because you have to account for SO many things (you are, in fact, trying to emulate one facet or another or real life, be it 1000 years past, today, or 1000 years in the future) and you have to be fairly good skills in all of these areas as well.

So please, before you jump right into creating a game, look at all the things that you have to contend with - I know that I didn't answer your extra question (because I don't personaly know of many good game-writing links), but I hope this helps you with your decision to write a game - and if you do, make sure to post the URL here so we can all play it! :)
