just a thought Can't Post

while i sit here and ponder.. i must relay a thought...

how about possibly a "member of the month"? or something to that affect... then maybe if you do get the T-shirts, you could give them as a prize... or something along them lines...

just some thoughts..

I Hope this helps...

Hey Randor!

I was just thinking about the same thing a few days ago while surfing on perlmonks. I think it's a good and positive way to make such a rate system:

- Valuable answers
It motivate peoples to make long, well explained answer. To an extend, those answer could even be selected to go to the tutorial section, with little or no work.

- Self-satisfaction
People recognize your work, and you feel rewarded for the efforts, and the time you put in making an in-depth reply. (if it helps)

- PerlGuru's Fame
Even after a little period of time, the website could benefit from people trying to make quality answers.

Btw, i think members-of-the-month should be discarded from the voting system for the next six month, else peoples like japhy or sleuth will end up with a whole wardrobe of perlguru's T-Shirts Smile

LOL that sounds like a really good idea. I have seen it on other forums where there is a "member of the day" and it would make people pride themselves in providing sound and very explanatory answers.

I say go for it :)

So who decides who the lucky winner is and how do they choose?

Of course, we think all our members are members of the day/week/year ... but that's way too many free t-shirts ;)

Re: just a thought [In reply to] Can't Post

well, there is many different ways to choose who it is:

random drawing[\b]: each time you just randomly draw from every member that has had atleast XX amount of posts/replies in that time period.

amount of correct answers (ie: like www.experts-exchange.com ).

allow all members to choose each time by a poll: have all the members choose from a shortened list of those most active each time.

as i think of more i can add them if you wish...

Re: just a thought [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes a poll would be cool, but it is quite deterministic the way you make polls on WWW Threads, may be people posting to a thread?

because someone posting a lot doesnt mean he brings something interresting...

maybe we could make a challenge for someone to write such a voting system (compatible with WWW Threads maybe?)

Re: just a thought [In reply to] Can't Post

in fact i think i would vote for Marcus, who is damn patient and helpful to Jenny.

In fact i could also vote for Jenny, if she promised not to ask another question. Or i will suicide. No, even, i would torture myself slowly before giving me death!!! (and it could be so sweet when i read some answers... Crazy).

maybe we should also make a forum topic like: "i'm stupid, i dont know how to use a computer, but explain me how i can do a recursive file searching function? and btw, is there a way to sort the file list with a B-Tree according to their binary content for an effective dictionnary compression?"... (yeah, i know, some people dont need help, they just need a brain, ...)

i dont mean no offense, well, i mean a little anyway... but i hate those people that wait for answers without trying to understand what they are doing:

In Reply To
Why are the two dots necessary?
../a_fail.html

aaaaargh... help me!

Tell me if i'm wrong, but that's not because Andrew (who tries to make us think he's called JennyW) doesnt understand ANYTHING about path (who never typed "cd .."? ... Andrew, i recommand you to read this), ... why should we ALWAYS make good answers...? I mean life would be no fun, it's already really hard to understand some JAPH, now if we need to understand what those really strange two dots means?! wow we're dead...

maybe we should also make the not-member-of-the-month, the one who asks questions like "I tried to install ActiveState perl, but it asks me to click with 'a mouse' (what do they mean with that poor mouse?) on "i agree" for the license sake, is there a way i can do that with the keyboard? i really love animals."

aaaaaaaaargh, freddo!!!
