URL Of Refering Web Pages Can't Post

My friend has a Geocities website and they provide visitor tracking/statistics. There was one thing that I was wondering how they did it: the statistics showed the url of the page that the visitor went to just before my friends page. In other words it shows (potentially) the url of a page that links to his page. Is there an evironment variable I'm not aware of or maybe it's stored in a hash somewhere? How do they do that? I'd like to implement this myself! :)

Yes, there is an environment variable, $ENV{HTTP_REFERER} will get it for you.
