Making Large software apps in Perl Can't Post

Hi There.

Although Perl is a perfect scripting language to link things together, is it also possible to make large software programs.

If I can make real Win32 applications in perl, I would certainly do so.
Is that possible?
Is there a perl-compiler out there? (making exe programs)

-
Currently I use Visual Basic to make funny programs in Windows, since you can make cool things without much trouble, just like in Perl.

TOTALLY! It's my current forte if you will. All you need is the Tk module (gui module) and for good measure: the Win32 module (mostly for the Win32::Process)

As far as compiling the Perl code, I think they have some "Perl2Exe" code out there, but I've never used it. You'll find that even when your code becomes cumbersomly large.... it still kicks pretty fast.

ok, you have sparked my interest in this TK module? i looked around a bit but failed to find any "start to finish" doc's on how to use it? can you help me out by directing me to some usefull docs on it?

Thanks for any help,
Randor

I Hope this helps...

well after some more searching, the docs on Tk mod are still eluding me, BUT i did find something that might interest you, it is called wxPerl it is here: http://wxperl.sourceforge.net/ it is a new GUI fer perl, from what i have found on it, the docs are not the greatest, but it is worked from the wxWindows source, so if you use those docs it is workable... i am reading up more on it, and i will let you all know if i find anything interesting...

PS: if you know the loc of the docs for tk mod, i would still like to see them...

If you've got Tk installed properly, (I use the PPM) then you should be able to type perldoc Tk and get all the info you need on methods, widgets, etc... For instance: Typing perldoc Tk gives you the table of contents, whereas typeing perldoc Tk::Button will give you info specific to that widget. It's got pretty good built in docs.

Also, one of the neatest things about the Tk module is that O'reilly has a book on it. Also on their website www.perl.com:
http://www.perl.com/search/index.ncsp?sp-q=Tk
Check out that link on a search of Tk stuff. It's got some good stuff.

Your link is really great.

However, do I really got those *ugly* UNIX (or KDE) screens at my windows desktop??

I want to make REAL windows applications, like I'm doing now in Visual Basic. VB6 makes programming fun, just like Perl. in VB6 are things like GUI's, Multithreading, Events, Classes, DLL's and OCX files easy to make, but I'm missing the Perl functionality, and the cool perl syntax.

I'm not that interested in making compatible perl programs when it comes to GUI stuff (it would be fun though).

Is there also a possibility to call the Windows 32 API functions in Perl? (unfortunately that would make an application incompatible Blush)

Using Tk in a windows environment will produce your your standard MicroSoft style GUI's, just like VB6. The radiobuttons will be round (not diamond like UNIX) and so on. Does that answer your question? I'm not really sure if that's what you're asking or not...

Well, I saw some screenshots at the websites you refered to. I was really shocked when I saw the UNIX icons.

BTW, what kindof codes do you add to the post-test, in order to see a 'quote' markup?

To use the quotes and and emoticons, you add them as you are typing your message... just like HTML.

to add a quote (you were so close) you just add quote markups:

[qoute]This is a quote, except I misspelled the words in the braces so that they would not be recognized by PerlGuru.com...[/qoute]

if I spelled them correctly... we get:

In Reply To
This is a quote, except I didn't misspelled the words in the braces so that they would not be recognized by PerlGuru.com...

You'll see the changes when you preview your post. ALWAYS preview your post!
