logging when server is down Can't Post

Is there a script that can log when, the server I have my homepage on, is up or down? Maybe run a check each half an hour & if its up, it will be logged... that way I will see if the server is reliable or if I should find a new one?

Well...
This really depends on your server that you are hosting on. If they allow you to run a cron job, and if you can tell whether httpd is running you could write a little script to do a ps on the http daemon and log to a file. Otherwise if you are wondering if their internet connection is up, you could write a script that performs a ping to the server or if the script is on the server, ping something like www.yahoo.com. Last but not least you could use perl & cron to open a socket connection to your home page and see if it gets anything back. If it doesnt then most likely the web server is down.

Hope this helps.
