String to variable Can't Post

I have a string that has the value:
$String = "NT File\auth"
= "NT\file"
... two recs above... As it is a field, I want to put it in a variable to load:
$string =~ /(\w+)/
$var = $1
Can you tell me how to get this in the variable using $string =~ /(what should this be)\

Please help
