You're wanting to match 2 characters, but just comparing $line[1] (which is b) to b? The comparison -- $line eq 'b' is true.

If you didn't know, for the first entry in a list in 0, not 1.

Not sure I really understand the question. You say you want to match 2 characters but you are only testing against 1 character.

Also, if you are checking to see whether an entire line(based on the name of your array) is matching only 2 characters, you may want to readup on regular expressions.
