Custom forum to avoid logging in each post. Can't Post

I've been developing a strategic/RPG style game using CGI and SSI. What I'm attempting to add is a message board feature, along the style of UBB and this forum. (not the 'indented thread' style) Since this will only be availalbe to the 'members', it should be easy to replace the login/password with a cookie that pulls their profile info for.

Unfortunately, my knowledge of PERL is still quite limited and I've only hacked together my own scripts from scratch.

In attempting to look through the scripts for other boards, I am completely befuddled by the advanced code and am having trouble following the logic.

My gauntlet quest has one of two options:

1) Find out how to [semi] easily alter a free or cheap BBS to use cookies as the login.

2) Point my brain in teh direction it needs to figure out how threaded boards work so I can hack my own together.

Thanks in advance for any info!

I learned everything I needed to know to make my own BBS from tearing apart UBB freeware version. I learned how they did everything the board is capable of and I evern added a lot more to it. I'd go and download that version from infopop.com and learn from that. Just don't use it after you modify it, I mean don't put it on your site and offer it up to people, because then you'll get in trouble with infopop people.

Also look into http://www.ub2k.com/ and get the UltraBoard if you like. I belive if you were to get this one is already supporst cookies for long periods of time.

Check out Ultra Board though, I think it's free.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to hack UBB a little once my other work calms down. Just curious though, how can I make my own message board sufficiently different from InfoPop's if I just modify the heck out of their scripts to learn how they work.

Granted, this is a grey-area with copywrites, but if I learn the technique from UBB and then recreate something similar, would that still be copying? Assuming I don't just edit Ultimate.cgi and call it my own, the process of creating my own script using the 'technology' learned from UBB would still be copying would it not?

*sigh* I suppose I could contract a better programmer for what might amount to a minor modification.... :)

The Rule is this, If they patient their board for some kind of great & new technology then you can't even do something similar to what they did. But since this technology is old and open source "GNU License Agreement" then if you take what they made, and modify over 20% of there whole code, or say, you make your own using the same techniques as them, there's no way you would copy there code more than 80% just by trying to mimic what there code accomplishes. So then you'd be in the clear. Remember, even with books, more than 20% different to tell the same story, doesn't qualify as plagiarism. SO have at it!.

O_O

Me too sleuth, except I released all my 'modifications' for the freeware UBB and was a moderator over at UBBDEV untill Infopop stoped freeware hacking and I got board of UBB ;)

Speaking of which, I started this website right before they stoped freeware hacking:
