Estimating Query results... Can't Post

Hi all:

I've noticed in some of my larger mysql databases that the numrows function adds 1-3 seconds to the duration of a query. I really want to display the qeury results in a speedy fashion, as you would. So I was wondering if there is a calculation to estimate the number of results as apposed to actually counting each one. Thus making the query run faster. Google.com's search results page is a good example of what I am talking about.

Any ideas?
