.htaccess HTML Login Can't Post

Microsoft have removed the url authentication system for .htaccess, so you can't login to a member's area using anymore.

My product Locked Area offers HTML login which requires the users browser to support the above url, which IE no longer does. So the tool is pretty much useless!

How can I get around this? Would using LWP to fetch the url work, then display the html page through the script? Or does LWP require the url syntax to be supported in the users browser for this to work? Is their another way to login to .htaccess member's areas without the pop-up? If I'm not mistaken, I think this is possible with PHP.

LWP allows you to access URLs that are behind basic authentication. Read lwpcook (especially the section on "Accessing Protected Documents").
