help with perl script Can't Post
It is true that i am a beginner but I am in dying need of help....



I looked at many tutorials but I am still confused on how to get the exact words from a log file. I have files that keeps track of lot of user information and their hosts. But I onlly need to fetch couple of things from the file but the way it is set I am having hard time finding something strong enough to do the work.

for example:

host 123.45.23.244 {

user info
host info
dns info etc...

}

as well as :
user merry-1 {
dns matching info from above
}

now it is not any kind of delimited file. this is how the representation looks like but i couldn't find a function that would do the work of just getting user info and using dns matching to put the two entries together. Any kind of help is appreciated. IF any more info needed let me know...

this should be in the beginner forum, and cross posting the same question on the same day on different forums is frowned upon. You have many answers to this question on the other forum so anyone posting here would either be duplicating those answers or wasting their time. In the future wait a few days before posting the same question on another forum if you are not getting any replies on the other forum. Cool

I beg your pardon but this is the first time I am using this forum as help. I haven't posted ever before on here and I haven't asked the same question. I looked for an answer in the old forums but didn't find anything that would help me. THen I came and post.

I was pretty sure this was your first time here as your post count was one. I didn't mean cross-posting the same question internally on this forum, I meant the "other" forum that you posted the same question on:

sorry for not being clear about that.

This particular forum "I need a program that..." is when you are asking for a custom or pre-existing script, not when you are trying to ask for help with some code. I thought your post belonged in the beginner forum since it seemed like you were asking for help with some basic stuff. My apologies if I was wrong about that. You will get more replies (hopefully) if you post in the correct forum (beginner, intermediate, advanced) as this part of the forum in not very active.

If he posts the same question on more than one website to either gain a faster answer or to receive different approaches to his problem, I see no problem with that. If you keep seeing his questions at different websites perhaps you should get out more.
