a question from the llama

For those of you who have the llama book handy, and know more about Perl than I, in the authors' answer to exercise 3, chapter 4, they pose the further question: "Why is the control variable named $element instead of Perl's favorite default, $_?" I have no idea. My solution to this exercise actually used the defaults @_ and $_ and worked just fine. Anyone know the answer? Thanks for your help.
