Copying variable of html to a Variable in CGI Can't Post

hi, I'm a beginner..

I have a small problem here. I want to copy a variable in html to a variable in CGI.

Lets say, i have a variable (say v1) in my application in html. and another variable (say v2) in cgi.

Now i want to copy the contents of v1 to v2..

i tried this but it doesnt work...this is my portion of code.....

$query = new CGI;

$v2 = $query->param (v1);

This doesnt work...can any1 help me out/./
