Pipe to/from external script Can't Post

I'm trying to write a program that basically strings together a bunch of individual scripts/programs. Instead of the user having to run each one separately and enter the same information over and over, he runs my script, enters the information once, and it automatically runs all the other scripts. For the programs which take their input from command line arguments, I simply use backticks. However some of the programs prompt the user for information. I need to send information stored in variables in my script to the STDIN of the external running script at the appropriate times (I also need to scan the STDOUT of the other script to see what data it is asking me to input). What is the best way to do this?
