I must be the stupidest person alive Can't Post

I apologize ahead of time, but here goes... When I pull up my command prompt from the accessories menu and it says "C:\Documents and Setting\Compaq Qwner> if I put in perl -v it comes back with This is perl, v.5.6.1 etc... Then, if I type in (at "C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq Owner>") interest.pl it comes back with 'interest.pl is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file' and I don't know what to do.

What should I do to get this program to run?

Thank you

Diane

Re: [dimilinowski] I must be the stupidest person alive [In reply to] Can't Post

try:

perl c:\path\to\interest.pl

where 'c:\path\to\' is the directory path where you have interest.pl stored on your computer.

not sure if it matters or not on windows, but try to name your file without spaces (in unix you have to escape spaces) and then make sure that path to your file that you are specifying is correct, and contains an extension(if it has one)

best way just "cd" into directory where your file is first do ls (or i guess it is dir) and make sure you see your file there, if you do then type perl NameOfThatFileAsItAppears.extensionGoesHere

hmmm... try as winfinit suggests and chdir (change diectory) to where your perl script is and try running from there, that way you can just use the scirpt name:

perl interest.pl

or try the full path to perl and the full path to the script:

c:\perl\bin\perl.exe c:\path\to\interest.pl

if none of that works read the activeperl documentation

Re: [winfinit] I must be the stupidest person alive [In reply to] Can't Post

pretty much what it says, is when I cd into the directory it comes back with file or directory does not exist. Then if I dir it comes back with a list of items like JAlbum, start menu, etc but nothing about perl.

Please help

Thanks

Dont know if you are still having problems with this, but it sounds like you are doing dir in the Compaq Owner folder.

load your cmd prompt and then "cd.." until you get to "c:"

then "cd path/to/folder" that contains your .pl file and then type
"perl file.pl" (replacing file with whatever your .pl file is called)

Exactly I am soooo happy to hear from you. But, my question (I am sure I am tying to pull from the Compaq Directory) when I go to Accessories what do I need to type in nexr?

Thank you

I dont know what you mean by "go to accessories" i'm afraid? What is it you are trying to do exactly? Running a perl script just involves typing "perl interest.pl" at the dos prompt when in the folder that your perl script is saved.

Re: [aerris] I must be the stupidest person alive [In reply to] Can't Post

Maybe I'm the one confused. I've been trying to run my programs from the command prompt under accessories under all programs.

Thanks

Re: [dimilinowski] I must be the stupidest person alive [In reply to] Can't Post

My other basic question is...is it supposed to say C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner> where I type in my file perl file.pl?

Or should it just say C:\ ?

Thanks

This is a perl forum, and we've diagnosed your problem as needing to know more about how to use the DOS command prompt. For further help, I would just google "DOS tutorial" or "running perl dos".

type "cd\" (leave out the quotes) and hit the enter key until all you see is "c:\>" or "c:\". Or type "cd c:" which will take you directly to the 'c' prompt.

Re: [KevinR] I must be the stupidest person alive [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Kevin--guess what?!! I finally got it!!! I found an awesome DOS forum (which took me a while, actually) and they're going to help me with the DOS issues I have.

Also, I know I sound kinda stupid but I've read the entire Perl book probably 50 times and I understand everything there is to know about perl, pretty much, (I'm like an avid hobbist but have never created an entire program) but the book has never explained how to take the perl programs and create an actual program like Excel's layout. Am I looking in the wrong place and if I am please tell me where I should go.

I'm learning alot about html. I have my own shopping cart and other website (please take a look at them, if you like-- www.heathsstuff.com and www.dianemilinowski.com )but I really want to learn how to make entire applications where you install it (the program) onto your computer and then open it from an icon. Can you point me in the right direction?

You've been so good to me. Thanks for the patience.

I have no experience with writing perl programs that are installed in the manner you describe.
