Book on Regular Expressions Can't Post

Hi,

I would like to get to become better friends with regular expressions in Perl.

I have seen many references to Oreilly's "Mastering Regular Expressions." I am concerned by the generality of the book in terms of programming languages. I am only interested in Perl.

Does it matter what language you are taught regexes in?

Does anyone suggest a different book?

Thank you!

A book that I thought was good for learning regular expressions was "Perl 5 by Example". It is available online these days. Google for the title and you will find it.

That looks great. The author seems quite interesting and generous.

Kevin, do you think that the best way to learn regexes better is to just do a lot of examples, as opposed to reading a book?

Would you suggest that I not buy Mastering Regular Expressions?

Thanks!

The best way is a combination of reading and trying examples. I suggest you purchase Mastering Regular Expressions, many people consider it the definitive book on the subject. It is maybe not a good book if you don't already know the basics of regular expressions as it doesn't really teach you regular expressions but how to use them more efficiently.

thank you for the explanation. I suppose that is why the book is not language-dependent.
