Perl and SOAP from the Linux CLI Can't Post

I'm very new to Perl but having background in other languages. I want to start learning Perl and I've decided to jump in at the deep end....

I have a web-app that accepts SOAP requests and returns an XML response. I would like to write a perl script that runs from the linux command line that sends a request, accepts the response, parses the xml, and stores the values it returns.

Of course, I have no background in perl so I don't really know where to start. If someone could help out here with some example code, or links to Perl/SOAP specific examples I'd be very grateful.
