Password protecting a file - very urgent for me	Can't Post

Hi there,

I have a text file in the cgi-bin. It has sensitive data in it which can be accessed (reading and writing to it) with scripts called from the website.

Is there any way that I can password protect the file and then get my script to open and close it accordingly.

The cgi-bin is not available for viewing to users of the website, however, I have heard that it is possible to access files in the bin.

Perhaps there is a better way of protecting the data (without too much expense). If so, I would love to know.

As an aside, how many ways are there to get at the files in the bin and does it happen alot?

I can't help you with the file password protection but if you set the permissions to 773 on the file you won't be able to view it through the browser or download it. Also if the bin can't be view through the browser it would be very difficult to get the name of the file so that one could attempt to access it.
