Password protecting a file - very urgent for me

Hi there, I have a text file in the cgi-bin. It has sensitive data in it which can be accessed (reading and writing to it) with scripts called from the website. Is there any way that I can password protect the file and then get my script to open and close it accordingly. The cgi-bin is not available for viewing to users of the website, however, I have heard that it is possible to access files in the bin. Perhaps there is a better way of protecting the data (without too much expense). If so, I would love to know. As an aside, how many ways are there to get at the files in the bin and does it happen alot? Many thanks, Willie
