Need advice about Perl power Can't Post

Greetings All !

I've been using Perl for a while and will soon be operating a Perl-based auction script/site.

However, I'm thinking about the future. Just in case my site should become popular, I'm wondering how many hits a Perl .cgi script can take per day before overloading the server it's on ?

(Each individual auction on the site is saved as a textfile, as are user records.)

I'm thinking, based on what little I've overheard/read from various sources, that I may have to rewrite the entire code in something else (Javascript ?)... and may have to interface it with some sort of SQL database (MySQL ?). That is, IF I want it to remain fast and be able to handle a lot of traffic.

If you have any thoughts/advice, please Email me at "" or "", as I will probably post my problem in multiple forums on multiple sites... hoping to get some information quickly.

Thank you !!!!

If you have CGIs that are saturating the server, the growth path is to bring the CGI functionality "in process" (into the web server). If you want to stick with Perl, and if you control the web server and are running Apache, mod_perl is a good path to investigate.

Well, at this point, I don't own the server, though that may lie down the road about six months from now.

Thanks !
