A very novice question [:/]	Can't Post

I have been trying to setup a forum with a PERL file that runs the setup.

I have got Active PERL on my computer and want to run setup.pl

Mozila Firefox gives me an option to download or open the file. I have ascociated .pl files with Active PERL. If I open with ActivePERL the script will open up for 2 seconds then close. I am a newbie to websites. I am creating my first one out of HTML and javascript.

How can I run the PERL setup?

Are you running Windows?

Go to the Start menu and open a Command Prompt. In it, run setup.pl

I love Perl; it's the only language where you can bless your thingy.

Perl documentation is available at perldoc.perl.org. The list of standard modules and pragmatics is available in perlmodlib.

Hi Epicguy,

What's going on is that the script's window is closing after it completes. This isn't too useful if you want to see any output from the script.

As Shawn says, to get the window to hang around, you have to open a DOS command window (cmd.exe) then run perl from the command prompt:

Code

Click Start->run 
Type "cmd.exe" 
[The cmd.exe window comes up and presents a DOS command prompt. Then type:] 
# chdir c:\<path>\<to>\<setup.pl> 
# perl setup.pl

I don't use ActiveState but It's the most windows-integrated perl distro. I'll bet that if you go to Start->Programs->ActivPerl you will find a shortcut to an interactive perl window where you can run your program.

Thanks. I ran CMD. I have linked all .pl files with ActivePerl. All the comand prompt does is show me the codeing. What I want to do is run the code in my browser.

Hi Epic,

I understand your frustration. You download this cool web app and you can't get to first base because it has this stupid setup that won't double-click. Worse, it requires you to install a whole programming language just to run the setup! You could give a rat's a** about Perl, you just want your 'forum' to work.

But, "Oy!". Any download that assumes you know how to run 'perl setup.pl' may present a command line naif such as you apparently are with a formidable learning curve. The fun just begins when you run the installer, too.
