Download of perl version download of perl5.6.1 Can't Post

Our different landscapes have different versions perl 5.6.1(prod) and perl 5.8.8. (dev). We just want to upgrade perl to 5.8.8 in prod..

To do this, we need to test out upgrade of 5.6.1 to 5.8.8.. The sad part is we dont have 5.6.1 software for windows.

can someone give me link for perl 5.6.1 for windows x86 as this software link is not readily available anywhere

You could contact Activestate to see if they have an archive of old releases that are available for download.

Another option would be to download the source code and compile it yourself.

Which part of the upgrade process are you concerned with and need to test, the actual perl upgrade, or verifying that your older perl scripts will run under 5.8.8?

One thing you need to be aware of, if you don't already know, is that modules written for 5.6.x that use XS code are not binary compatible with 5.8.x, which means they will need to be recompiled.

You really don't want to do that on an individual module basis. So, the best upgrade path is to wipe out 5.6.1 and do a clean install of 5.8.8 or preferably 5.10.1. Then install any additional modules that you require and test your scripts.

The actual perl upgrade is easiest portion of the process. If your scripts are coded in the typical 5.6 style, then upgrading them to the current coding standards will be a chore.

The scripts are written and tested in 5.8.8 in development. In production , We have 5.6.1 .

Then you're going to want to do a clean install.

I'm not sure I understand your need to locate the old 5.6.1 version.

In production which is of old version:5.6.1, We are getting some dump files that are getting created when we execute any perl script. I suspect that the old version is causing the problem.

So we want to the test the perl scripts in 5.6.1, see the dump files and then upgrade to higher version to see that error is not there

So, if I understand you correctly, you want to have both 5.6.1 and 5.8.8 in your dev environment so that you can test the scripts in each perl environment without having to change the prod system. Is that correct?

I've done a little searching and have not found any old binaries for download. Activestate does state that they have archives of these available, if you're willing to pay for their ($1,000) Business Edition.

That's not the approach I'd take, but it would be the easiest. I'd download the source code, which is available at the link I provided in my prior post, and compile it myself.

Sorry for asking simple questions. what do you mean by compile yourself?? I have downloaded the tar.gz file and extracted into a seperate windows folder.

Now what should be my next steps??

You need a C compiler (such as gcc).
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gdcwin/

After installing the compiler, then cd into the directory were you extracted the perl files. There should be a README or similar file that provides the compiling/installing instructions.

Typically those instructions tell you to run the following commands.

configure
make
make test
make install
