Actually, it appears that the news example you sited is using a redirect. Notice the link you click on and then notice the URL of the page you end up at. This could be easily done by haveing the index page of the http://www.bbc.co.uk/news folder have a redirect to http://news.bbc.co.uk/. However, noticing the .stm extension on most of the files on that site, I would suspect some other fancy things are going on. I am not familuar with the .stm, but I would suspect that they are using some dynamic page generation much like ATG Dynamo uses .jhtml. Viewing the source of the file shows that there are a lot of blank lines in the code between different sections.
