Sorry, as far as I know I have said that before.

You reported getting a different output from your script from the output that I got. That still seems to be a mystery.

The failure of 2-digit hex values in regular expressions to match corresponding characters, without clear documentation, also seems unfortunate to me.

Otherwise I think you have helped clarify the issues that I raised, for which I am grateful.

If you see a script like this:

Code
print 2 + 2   #add 3 and 4 together
and then you run a script that actually adds 3 and 4 together, wouldn't you expect the output to be different? Because that is what you did in this thread.

As far as I know, I ran the script that you posted, except for adding the #!/usr/bin/perl line, as noted earlier.
