Is there a compression script? Can't Post

Is there a way to compress old data files (txt), that is zip, tar, gz whatever right on a unix server using a perl script or similar?
Just wondering.
Thanks

Yes.

Do a search for Compress:: and/or Archive:: at http://search.cpan.org/ .
