Modifying ASCII PDF Can't Post

I've got a bunch of faulty ASCII PDF files, a result of the grayscale image problem from a few years back. Anyway, they were fixed badly and the images won't show in Acrobat 4, so I've got to refix them.

Basically I've just got to replace occurrences of "/DeviceGray /Decode [ 1 ]" with "/DeviceGray /Decode [1 0]". Simple enough, except that it seems the PDFs aren't entirely legal ASCII files. I can open and fix the files succesfully in Windows' WordPad. However, TextPad complains about null characters and Perl won't find the above string at all, which I suspect are related problems.

Any help forthcoming? Thanks in advance!

(edit: fixed typos)
