Open relay Can't Post

I've got a couple of scripts that send emails. When the recipient tries to reply to them he gets an open relay error. I know that this has something to do with spam but what exactly and how do I get around the problem?

Any help or pointers gratefully received.

Re: Open relay [In reply to] Can't Post

The relay attempt failed error (depending on your mail server configuration) means that a user on the server (let's say it's "ray" using the address "ray@street.com") is attempting to send mail before logging in to check email. This security measure that prevents spammers from bouncing emails off your smtp server.

If you're forwarding ray@street.com to another email address, let's say your hotmail account, you may be receiving this error because either you haven't checked your mail yet, or because your mail server doesn't allow it. If this is the case, try to not forward your email from ray@street.com if this option is available to you.

If this isn't the case, please paste the message header and/or the error message, and identify whether or not you're forwarding your email to another address.

You may also want to contact your server admin to see if there's a solution available on that end.
