Can I run perl off a desktop without connecting to a server? Can't Post

I need to run an app where I won't have internet access. Can this be done?

Perl apps work just fine without net access.

How do I set up the Perl app to run, though? Is the first line still #!/usr/local/bin/perl

or do I list the c:\etc path to Perl?

Ultimately, I need to run a Perl app through a browser on a desktop at a trade show where I won't be able to have access to a phone.

Ah. You need to run through a browser. That's different from running a deskop "application", and the details for making it work depend on which web server you're using.

If you're using ActiveState Perl under IIS, it's sufficient to use the .pl extension, though you may need to use IIS's administrative interface to allow scripts to execute in whatever virtual directory maps to where the perl files are.

If you're using Apache, then the #! line will need to point to perl.exe, and the .htaccess needs to include

Options +ExecCGI

Scripts using CGI.pm will -- unless you tell them otherwise -- run in a emulation mode if run from a command line.

Alternately, install a webserver on your desktop (Apache, Xitami, PWS) and accessing it via http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1/ even when you're offline.

If you need to run PERL offline and output to a browser, then after you install Perl for win32, try visual perl from www.tucows.com.

This lets you generate HTML pages from perl scripts offline.

I'd like to second Kanji's suggestion.

Get ActivePerl from Activestate.com and Apache from apache.org. ActivePerl has excellent documentation, including everything you need to know about setting up Apache and Perl for CGI in Windows. And more! :)
