Tied up with threads Can't Post

I have a question on threads.

Suppose I want to spawn a thread, and still keep the main thread alive. Now, would my main thread be suspended till the child thread performs a "join", i.e., is join "blocking" the main thread?

Is there a way to continue execution on the main thread while the child thread does its job? Is this the same thing as doing a "detach" on the child thread?
