I think Red Hat uses MAKEDEV to generate the /dev entries, so /dev/dsp is most likely what it generates. You'd have to ask the administrator to give you read access to the /dev/dsp device. By default, I'm sure it's configured read-only for root (*maybe* group sys) ..
