Client server communication based on MAC address

HI All,
I want to do client server programming using MAC address and not IP address in PERL. I have searched lots of documents but everywhere they have given client server coding using IP address and not MAC address.
Basically the communication has to happen at L2 layer which does not have any IP address concept as only MAC address is present.
Kindly help me
