Use of uninitialized value in string ne Can't Post

What's wrong with following code:


Code
return if ($#separators < 1); 

($anchor) = $separators[1];
if ($anchor->parent()->tag() ne "td" || $anchor->parent->attr('width') ne "98%") {
t "credits section not found";
return;
}


return error: Use of uninitialized value in string ne at line 4.

most likely the following is returning undef:
