You can write a script and it will run on all flavours of UNIX, Windows, MacOS etc (VBScript isn't portable and won't do this!!!) An impressive feat! - Perl is more powerful and has loads of modules. Just check out CPAN. It's a shame there aren't more Perl programmers on the Windows and MacOS platforms though :( - Perl is flexible. It can be used for many different tasks, not just web programming (PHP is a little too web oriented to be as flexible as Perl), from logon scripts, to system task monitors. - Perl is easy. You only need to know a very little to get started and you can create meaningful programs that do real stuff. Unlike C and C++, it is also very kind when it falls over ;) Perl Cons ========= - None that I know of. But being a Perl lover, I guess I'm biased. If anything, it's a shame more people don't know about the powers of Perl. It's a great language and really lets you program the way you want to. *NB XML IS NOT A PROGRAMMING OR SCRIPTING LANGUAGE!!! It is a meta language that allows you to create your own tagged languages. Compared to c++ or c, you can't use perl to develope windows aplications for the desktop on your pc becuase most people don't have perl installed. Also, c++ can be used to make more complex programs, like internet explorer, or cute ftp. As for internet programming perl tops em all. I've looked into PHP and I have tried writing it a little, but it takes less to do the same thing in perl, I don't like that in PHP there usually is only one way to do something. Plus no split in PHP. This article is pretty good too, I can't find the article I read about direct comparison between perl, php, python, c++, and javascript, but they rated perl the best.
