what $?>>8 means?

from some perl code, i saw this $?>>8
$? i know is return the result from last system call, but what >>8 means?? is it other number refer to other meaning?

It's the right shift operator. See
perldoc perlop
.
The exit code of the executed command is stored in the left half of the 16 bit value of $?.
