How to open FTD file using PERL Can't Post

Hello!

I have an FTD (flat text database) file that I believe was created using PERL. I have no knowledge of PERL and am only interested in opening the file to view and extract the data to Excel or Access, which I have more knowledge of.

I installed the PERL software - but have no clue what to do from here onwards.

May I ask someone to provide a simple step by step tutorial on how to open and view/extract the data?

Thanking you in advance!

Did you try to open the file with a text editor?

Can you provide a few sample lines from the file?

It is quite possible that you don't even need Perl to do what you want to do, but we need to have a look at the content to figure out more precisely.

Thank you for your reply Laurent!

Yes I have tried Notepad, Notepad++, Excel, Access, etc.... with no luck. All gibberish.

I attached a screenshot for your reference when I open with Notepad++.

Thank you!

Not exactly gibberish, I see start of text, end of text, and some other stuff in there. Someone else might know what kind of file that is from the screen shot, but I have a couple questions.

What extension in on the file? .txt, .dat, .db?

Can you provide a hex dump of the first couple lines? I haven't used Windows or any Windows applications in some time, but google tells me you should be able to do a hex view with Notepad++.

Thank you for your input, Lightspd!

The extension is .ftd

A screenshot of the first lines of HEX is attached.

Thank you

Interesting. My next question would be what makes you think this is a DB file? Do you currently have a program that is using this file?

Yes it is a program that uses the file. I assume it is a db file since the information the program displays to the user is route information, departure time, arrival time, etc......and because of the .ftd extension. I am starting to guess that the file is probably protected and/or encrypted.

When you scroll down while viewing it in hex mode, does the data ever look like it becomes normal text? You could be right about it being encrypted.

The program that displays the information, do you have access the code to see how it handles the file and info?
