Good challenge : script optimizing gifs and jpgs Can't Post

I'm looking for a script in Perl or any other language that could be stored on a UNIX or Linux server that could optimize gif and jpg images online... Good one, eh? If anyone could help me out or even point me to easy to learn ressources to help me create this kind of script? I know it can be done since firms like Netmechanic or Adobe already have such tools... Thanks!

I don't know any scripts for this but there is a free online service at www.spinwave.com that works nice.
