Using perl to automate downloading of stock prices Can't Post

I was recently laid off work from a large investment bank. I used to have a Bloomberg terminal that I used to retrieve stock prices in Excel and use them for trading with multivariate analysis.

Sadly, I cannot afford a Bloomberg terminal and downloading them from the exchange website is tedious. For example, the site link is below

Is there some programming that can be done that can automate the retrieval of the prices from the website. My friend told me to learn perl. Where do I start from?

The way I see it looks the process of entering the form data can be automated, but I dont know how. My only knowledge of programming is Excel VBA but I am willing to invest time in a language that would help me.

Re: [longgamma] Using perl to automate downloading of stock prices [In reply to] Can't Post

The good news is that most of the code that you need is already written and available as modules. The bad news is that using these is probably beyound your ability for a first perl project.

If you a serious about learning perl, I recommend that you but the book "Learning Perl" ( or "Learning Perl on Win32 Systems" if that is what you will be using) Start at the beginning (Your book will tell you how to download a free copy of perl) and do all the exercises. (Your VBA experience will be of some help.) Try your real project occasionally. If you find you are not ready, go back to the book.
Good Luck,
