take a string input from a hand held scanner Can't Post

I'm trying to create a loop where it constantly takes input from a bar code scanner and goes off and does something without needing a user to hit a return.

I'm using

my $my_string = <STDIN>;

go do something with $my_string. But I want it just to go off and do it immediatly after scanning the bar code and not needing a return. I've tried several examples but they seem not to work like I need.

Can someone point me to an example out there somewhere?

Thanks as always
