Subtraction Can't Post

Ok, maybe I'm stupid but I have a feeling I'm doing something wrong here:

I'm trying to subtract two numbers that are stored in variables (gold and itemgold). Is this correct?

$newgold=$gold-$itemgold;

This is perfectly correct - you problem lies somewhere else ...
Maybe you can post the whole script here or, at least, larger part of it.
